Soon after the crazy summer of thinking that we would be launched into stardom, the lows of realizing that the moment had passed us by found their ways into my new songs. Looking back, I recorded and wrote so much more often and I am sure it was because it was all still so new to me. I envy that pace because now it seems like so much more of a process to me. “Anger in A Crowd” really captured my feelings of asking why I felt nothing was happening for us.
My 4-track and recording skills were becoming fairly impressive at this point. I was playing all of the instruments and starting to really create landscapes in the music. The song “Historical Underdosing” was the first song that went on to have a life in “Stage”. This version of it was more Nine Inch Nails-influenced than anything else I have ever done. When the band recorded it as the first song on H.U.’s follow up it was called “Choice”. I remember Greg and me outside our drummer Mike’s house getting very excited about how it will sound with the band playing it. I listen to the songs on this tape and feel very proud. It was the first time I heard real emotion coming through the speakers in my music. It was what we can call an emotional breakthrough.
One more thing, I remember my older sister’s friend hearing “Voice” and looking at her friend’s baby brother a little differently from that point on.
